The 4 Rules of Holiday Tipping
- Cash is king. Cash in a handwritten card is always better than a gift card or physical gift. It gives the recipient full flexibility, and the personal note shows you actually thought about it.
- Tip based on frequency and relationship. A nanny who cares for your children 50 hours a week gets a far bigger tip than the person who cuts your hair every 8 weeks. The table above reflects this — but adjust based on your actual relationship.
- Consistency matters. If you tipped your building super $100 last year and had the same level of service this year, don't drop to $50 unless something changed. People remember — and they talk to each other.
- If you can't afford cash, a sincere card is better than nothing. A handwritten note expressing genuine appreciation goes further than you think. Never skip acknowledging someone because you feel embarrassed about the amount.
The Essential Tier: People Who Deserve the Most
Nanny / Au Pair
1–2 weeks' payis the standard holiday bonus for a full-time nanny. If your nanny has been with your family less than a year, one week's pay is appropriate. For long-term nannies (3+ years), two weeks' pay or more shows recognition of their commitment. Always pair cash with a small, personal gift from your child — a drawing, a framed photo, or something the child picked out. For an au pair, 1–2 weeks' stipend is standard, plus a gift that reflects their experience in your country.
House Cleaner
The cost of one cleaning visit is the standard holiday tip. If your cleaner comes weekly at $120/visit, give $120. If you have a team rather than an individual, give cash to the lead cleaner and ask them to distribute, or prepare individual envelopes. Cleaners almost universally prefer cash over gifts — they know exactly what their service is worth.
Live-in Caregiver (Elder Care, Special Needs)
One week to one month's pay. This is the most significant holiday tip you'll give because the relationship is the most intimate and demanding. A caregiver who lives with your family member is providing around-the-clock support. At minimum, one week's pay. For a caregiver who has been with your family for years, one month's pay is a meaningful gesture.
Building & Household Staff
Apartment Building Staff
Building staff tips depend heavily on the size of your building and how much you interact with each person. In larger buildings with a full staff (super, multiple doormen, porters, handyman), the total you spend may be $200–500+, distributed with larger amounts going to the super and the doorman you see most often. In a smaller building with a part-time super, $50–100 is standard.
Suggested breakdown for a typical NYC doorman building:
- Superintendent: $100–200
- Doorman (main): $75–150
- Doorman (others): $25–50 each
- Porters / Handymen: $25–50 each
- Garage attendant: $25–50
Mail Carrier (USPS)
USPS employees cannot accept cash or cash equivalents(including Visa gift cards). The federal limit is $20 in value per occasion. Acceptable gifts: gift cards to a specific store or restaurant (not a generic Visa card), baked goods, travel mugs, gloves, or a simple thank-you card. Leave it in your mailbox with a note. For private carriers (UPS, FedEx, Amazon), there's no gift restriction, but these drivers rotate routes more often — a holiday snack basket left on the porch is more practical than cash.
Personal Service Providers
Hairdresser, Barber & Nail Tech
The easiest approach: at your last appointment before the holidays, tip the cost of one visit instead of the usual 15–20%. So if your cut-and-color is $200, tip $200. Pair it with a cheerful "Happy holidays, thank you for keeping me looking good this year." This is simpler than giving a separate gift and ensures the tip goes directly to the right person.
Personal Trainer
The cost of one session as a cash tip, or a thoughtful fitness-related gift. If you train at a big-box gym where the trainer is an employee (not independent), check their policy — some corporate gyms restrict cash gifts. A high-quality gift (nice water bottle, workout gear) paired with a card is always safe.
Pet Groomer & Dog Walker
For a dog walker you use daily, one week's payis standard — same logic as a nanny. For a groomer you see every 6–8 weeks, the cost of one groom. If you want to be extra charming, include a small bag of treats "from" your pet with a photo or paw-print card.
Teachers & Childcare Providers
Teachers generally should not receive cash.In many school districts, cash gifts to public school teachers are restricted or require disclosure. The most appropriate gifts: a $25–50 gift card (Target, Amazon, a local coffee shop), classroom supplies, or a heartfelt handwritten note from your child. A note from a student saying "you made me love reading this year" is worth more than any gift card.
For daycare staff (multiple people), consider organizing a group gift with other parents — one pooled cash gift divided among all staff is easier for everyone and feels more equitable. $25–70 per staff member from your family is the typical range, adjusted based on how many staff interact with your child and how frequently.
When to Give Holiday Tips
The sweet spot is the first two weeks of December.Don't wait until the last week before Christmas — many service workers budget around holiday tips for their own gift shopping, and getting it early is genuinely helpful. For building staff, check if your building organizes a holiday fund — pooled collections are common in NYC, Chicago, and other cities with large apartment buildings, and they simplify the process (though you may still want to give individually to staff you interact with most).
What if money is tight this year?A sincere handwritten card genuinely matters. Service workers would rather receive a warm note than nothing at all. Don't let embarrassment about the amount stop you from acknowledging the people who help you. "Thank you for taking such good care of our family this year" costs nothing and means a lot.
