In the United States, the standard tip for sit-down restaurant service is 18-20% of the pre-tax bill. For exceptional service, 20-25% is appropriate. For counter service or takeout, 10-15% is customary.
Tipping is generally calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. Tax is not a service you received, so it shouldn't be included in the tip calculation. However, many people tip on the total bill out of convenience — that's perfectly fine too.

For food delivery, tip 15-20% of the order total, with a minimum of $3-5. For takeout/pickup orders, 10% is a nice gesture since no table service is involved.
