Published June 7, 2026 · 5 min read

New Jersey's tipped minimum wage is $5.62/hour. The state has the highest population density in the US, shares the NYC and Philadelphia metro areas, and has the Jersey Shore tourism economy. 20% is the floor statewide — NJ's tipping culture is essentially NYC/Philly spillover. The state also has more diners than any other state in the country.

Atlantic City: Casino & Boardwalk Tipping

Atlantic City is the most tip-intensive city in New Jersey— the entire service economy runs on tips, from casino floors to boardwalk restaurants. AC's hospitality workers are career professionals who depend on tips as a core part of their income.

  • Casino cocktail servers: $1–5 per drink on the gaming floor. Free drinks aren't really free — the tip IS the price. $1 per drink is the minimum; $2–5 keeps them coming back fast and strong. This applies at all AC casinos: Borgata, Hard Rock, Ocean, Caesars, Tropicana, Harrah's.
  • Casino dealers: Tip in chips by placing a bet for the dealer on the table. Not required on every hand, but periodic dealer bets show appreciation. At blackjack and poker tables, a tip every 30–60 minutes is standard.
  • Casino restaurants: 20% minimum — same as any sit-down restaurant. This includes fine dining at Borgata (Izakaya, Old Homestead), Hard Rock (Council Oak), and Ocean (Amada).
  • Casino hotel housekeeping: $5 per night. AC casino hotels are high-traffic operations — housekeepers clean rooms daily even during your stay.
  • Boardwalk food stands: $1–2 in the tip jar at counter-service spots (salt water taffy, funnel cake, pizza).
  • Valet and bellhop at casino hotels: $5 per service. These are union positions, but tips are still standard.
  • AC nightclubs and pool parties: 20% at bars, $1–2 per drink, tip the bathroom attendant $1–2.

North Jersey: Newark, Jersey City & Suburbs

Jersey City & Hoboken: Directly across the Hudson from Manhattan, these cities fully adopt NYC tipping standards. 20%+ is the norm at sit-down restaurants, and the bar scene — especially in Hoboken — expects 20% of the tab. Rideshare drivers frequently cross state lines for EWR, JFK, and LGA airport runs; tip 20% for those trips.
Newark & Ironbound: Newark's Ironbound neighborhood is famous for its Portuguese, Brazilian, and Spanish restaurants. 20% is standard at these iconic spots. At NJPAC and Prudential Center events, bar and concession tips are appreciated.
Princeton & New Brunswick: University and pharma wealth means 20% is the baseline. Servers at upscale downtown Princeton restaurants expect 20-22%.
Jersey Shore: Asbury Park, Cape May, Wildwood, and Point Pleasant — during the summer season, 20%+ is standard. Servers work brutal hours for 3 months and earn the bulk of their annual income in summer.

Diner Culture & Seasonal Tips

NJ is the diner capital of the world with over 500 diners — table service, not counter service. Tip 18-20% like any sit-down restaurant. The Jersey Shore in summer (Asbury Park, Cape May, Point Pleasant): servers work brutal hours for 3 months and earn the bulk of their annual income — 20%+ is the norm. NJ's malls (American Dream, Short Hills, Garden State Plaza) are massive — restaurant servers deal with heavy tourist and shopper traffic. During nor'easters, tip delivery drivers extra for braving hazardous conditions. At boardwalk food stands, tip a dollar or two in the jar.
