How Much to Tip in Oregon (2026): Portland, Eugene & OR Tipping Guide

Published June 7, 2026 · 5 min read

Oregon has the highest minimum wage in the US at $15.95/hour (Portland metro), with NO tip credit. Yet tipping culture is strong — 20% is standard in Portland, driven by a progressive ethic and the understanding that the cost of living (especially housing) is very high. Portland is one of the best food cities in America, and the state's vibrant food cart, craft beer, coffee, and wine scenes all thrive on tipping.

Portland & Eugene

Portland: One of the best food cities in America. 20% standard at sit-down restaurants across the city — from Kachka to Le Pigeon to the countless farm-to-table spots. The food cart pod culture is world-famous — tip 10-15% or a couple of dollars (most carts now use Square/iPads, so digital tipping is standard). Craft breweries, cideries, and distilleries expect $1-2 per drink. Portland's coffee obsession (Stumptown, Coava, Heart, etc.) — tip $1-2 per drink at specialty coffee shops.
Eugene: College town (University of Oregon) with a strong local food movement. 18-20% standard. The Whitaker neighborhood and downtown both have excellent restaurants. During Ducks football games at Autzen Stadium, restaurants and bars are slammed — tip well on game days.
Willamette Valley Wine Country: Pinot Noir country — 20% at farm-to-table restaurants and tasting rooms. At wine tasting rooms, tip 10-15% of the tasting fee if service was excellent. McMinnville, Dundee, and Newberg have nationally recognized restaurants.
Bend: Outdoor and tourism boomtown in Central Oregon. 20%+ is common — the city attracts high-income visitors from California and Seattle. Craft beer scene (Deschutes, Crux, Boneyard) — $1-2/beer.
Oregon Coast: Cannon Beach, Newport, and Astoria — 20% during the summer tourism season. Many hospitality workers are seasonal.
Ashland: Home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival — 20% standard, especially during festival season.
Rural Eastern Oregon: 15-18% at small-town diners and cafes.

Food Carts, Coffee Culture & Wildfire Season

Portland's food cart pods are world-famous — tip 10-15% or a couple of dollars in the jar (most carts use Square/iPads now, so digital tipping is standard). Oregon wine country (Willamette Valley Pinot Noir): at tasting rooms, tip 10-15% of the tasting fee if service was excellent. Coffee culture (Stumptown, Coava, Heart, etc.) — tip $1-2 per drink at specialty coffee shops. Oregon's craft beer scene (Deschutes, Rogue, etc.) — $1-2/beer. During wildfire season, tip delivery drivers and service workers who are working in smoky conditions. Despite the high base wage, Oregon's rising housing costs (Portland median rent is over $2,000/month) mean service workers still rely significantly on tips to make ends meet.
